Photoshop is one of the most popular professional editors of all time. And, both professional and amateur designers use it all over the world. Certainly, if you want to go "legit", Photoshop, while tremendously powerful, comes at a price that not everyone can afford, especially if you are not in the design world.
But, today, there is a project that will surprise you: Photopea
With a layout very similar to Photoshop, even with very similar keyboard shortcuts, and totally ONLINE, you will have a complete photo editor that will allow you to do almost everything that the king of design programs allows you to do. Including adjustment layers and masks.
And remember, it is a completely free application that you can use without registration of any kind. There is also a paid version (around €40 per year) if you want to get some extras and use the programme without advertising.
It is also available in different languages (More/Languages menu) and even, if you use Chrome, you will see in More the option "Install", which adds access to your Chrome applications, making them easier to use.
And although it is not a desktop application, but an online one (which has its advantages and disadvantages), I think you will be surprised.
